Gay marriage backers plan Valentine's Day rally

The group leading the effort to legalize same-sex marriage in Minnesota is predicting a strong turnout at a State Capitol rally on Thursday. The Star Tribune reports that Minnesotans United anticipates two thousand people will show up for the Freedom to Marry Day rally at 3 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. The group has begun its statewide push to legalize gay marriage.

Minnesota Public Radio says that although DFL legislative leaders have said they don't plan to bring up same-sex marriage until the budget is done, the issue received more attention last week when DFL Gov. Mark Dayton made strong statements in support of same-sex marriage as part of his State of the State address.

Meanwhile, the Pioneer Press reports that the group that is leading efforts to block a move this session to legalize gay marriage has scheduled a rally of its own on March 7. Minnesota for Marriage plans its State Capitol rally at 2:30 p.m. Advocates for traditional marriage are being encouraged to urge their elected representatives "not to redefine marriage," said spokeswoman Autumn Leva.
