Get free ice cream then go help bees with Häagen-Dazs

Do you like Rocky Road ice cream? Well you better hope honeybees don't die off.

Häagen-Dazs is giving away free cones one day next month, and also wants you to talk about bees.

That's right GOB - bees.

The ice cream maker's free cone day will be May 9 from 4-8 p.m. Go to a participating shop and get a free kiddie scoop of ice cream or sorbet, in a cup, sugar cone or cake cone. Search here, and if a location is taking part, there will be a little icon next to its name.

And in return?

Häagen-Dazs, in return, is asking you to do something to help honeybees, a news release explains.

The honeybee population has been on the decline for a while. In 2015, 42 percent of bee colonies in the U.S. collapsed. That's a problem because honeybees are a key pollinator of many foods we eat. Including some ice cream.

"Without bees, many of our indulgent flavors would disappear from our shops, including Vanilla Swiss Almond, Strawberry and Rocky Road," Häagen-Dazs President Adam Hanson said in the release.

Häagen-Dazs has a whole campaign called Häagen-Dazs Loves Honey Bees – since 2008 they've donated more than $1 million to honeybee research, and last summer planted 6.5 miles of hedgegrow at their almond supplier's farm, giving the honeybees a year-round home.

So what can you do?

First "create some buzz" Häagen-Dazs says (nice pun), by talking to friends and family about how important bees are. You can also plant native wildflowers, shrubs, or trees at your home to help the local honeybees (maybe get a seed packet from General Mills), and let already-existing habitats the bees like stay intact.

The University of Minnesota has a bee plant guide here. And the Minnesota DNR has a bunch of pollinator information here.
