Girl, 16, dies in crash involving semi in southern Minnesota

Road conditions were wet with snow falling at the time of the crash.

Wet road conditions and falling snow may have contributed to a two-vehicle fatal crash involving a 16-year-old driver in southern Minnesota Monday afternoon. 

The Minnesota State Patrol reports that a 16-year-old girl driving a 2019 Ford Fiesta collided with a semi tractor trailer at the intersection of County Road 14 and Highway 13 in Freeborn County around 2:45 p.m. – just north of Interstate 90 near Albert Lea. 

The teen, identified as Grace E. Zimmerman, of Alden, Minnesota, was eastbound on County Road 14 at the time of the crash, while a 57-year-old Waseca man driving the semi was southbound on Hwy. 13. 

Zimmerman was transported to Albert Lea Medical Center where she succumbed to her injuries. 

The semi driver was not injured. 

According to Google Maps, traffic on Hwy. 13 does not stop at the intersection.
