A 4-year-old girl is in a critical condition in a hospital after being rescued from a near-drowning in Waite Park.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday at Quarry #11 at the Quarry Park and Nature Preserve, when Earnestine Williams, of St. Cloud, noticed her daughter was missing having last been seen in the water.
Sshe yelled that her daughter was drowning, attracting the attention of Nathan Sisk, of Foley, who ordered everyone out of the water.
He then asked for strong swimmers to enter the water and look for her, which several did.
One of them, Jason Weber of Elk River, found her 10-15 feet under the surface and was able to rescue her.
He brought her to shore where an unidentified woman started CPR, which continued until emergency responders arrived.
"Due to the quick reaction of strangers, the child had a pulse and was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital where she is listed in critical condition," the Stearns County Sheriff's Office said.
The Quarry Park and Nature Preserve covers 684 acres and is the largest park in Stearns County.
It opened as a park 20 years ago, and has become an increasingly popular attraction for swimming, cliff jumping, rock climbing and scuba diving in the water-filled, former granite quarries.
