Groups across Minnesota are remembering the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting.

Police said 50 people were killed and 53 were taken to the hospital following the shooting at Pulse, a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, early Sunday.

The shooting marked the deadliest mass shooting in United States history.

MN officials speak out

Minnesota officials weighed in on the shooting Sunday afternoon through official statements and social media. Governor Mark Dayton released the following in a statement:

"The horrific act of hatred and terror in Orlando was an unfathomable attack upon all of humanity. Our hearts go out to the innocent victims of that heinous assault. Following the Order by President Obama that all federal flags be flown at half-staff until sunset on June 16, 2016 as a mark of respect for the victims, I hereby order that all flags of the State of Minnesota also be flown at half-staff for that same period of time."

The Minneapolis Police Department also released a statement:

"On behalf of the entire MPD, we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the victims of the shootings in Orlando. Along with the rest of the nation and law enforcement community, we grieve with the victim’s families and the people in Florida. The mass shooting that’s occurred is shocking, sad and intolerable. The MPD wants to reassure residents and visitors in our city that we remain vigilant and committed to ensuring people are safe at large scale events with significant crowds. We continue to be in constant communication with our federal partners to make that possible. We stand with and protect all of our citizens in the fight against violence of any kind, including crime driven by hate to instill fear."

Moment of silence

At the inaugural Golden Valley Pride Festival Sunday, event organizers held a moment of silence prior to kicking off the day's festivities.

The festival was planned as a chance for people in the suburbs to celebrate LGBTQ people, families and friends, organizers said. It is being held at Brookview Park until 4 p.m. Click here for more information.

Vigils planned for Sunday night

Groups in Golden Valley aren't the only ones to honor the victims of the shooting.

LGBT groups in St. Cloud are planning a vigil for victims at 6 p.m. at the Stearns County Courthouse, according to the St. Cloud Times.

Another vigil is planned in Minneapolis' Loring Park at 7 p.m. Sunday, according to an event created by OutFront Minnesota.

And to honor the victims nationally, President Barack Obama has ordered flags be flown at half-staff until June 16.

LGBT Pride Month is celebrated every June in honor of the 1969 Stonewall riots in Manhattan, which is seen as the "tipping point" for the Gay Liberation Movement in the U.S., according to the Library of Congress.
