Golfers have tennis balls at the ready as they take to the ice for Chilly Open

Hundreds of golfers have headed to Lake Minnetonka today to take on a course with a difference at the 31st Wayzata Chilly Open.

The popular event sees golfers take on three nine-hole courses that have been carved out of the icy lake by volunteers for this year's event, according to the Chilly Open website.

This year's event has sold out with 1,200 competitors paying $40 each for the privilege of taking part, which will see them swap golf balls for tennis balls, and their putters for hockey sticks.

Meanwhile birdies are called "sealies" and eagles are "penguins" ... ok, they're not, but you get the idea.

No round of golf would be complete either without a drink at the 19th Hole, which can be found in the hospitality tent set up on the lake, which is also the venue for the chili cook-off taking place this afternoon.

SW News Media reports that more than ten local restaurants will be competing in the cook-off, while Midwest band Hitchville will be playing live music in the tent from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Chilly Open is all about a community get together," said Wayzata Chamber of Commerce President Becky Pierson told SW News. "It’s an opportunity for friends and business colleagues to come together in a fun environment, to try to embrace the cold weather that we have here in the winter."
