Good news: Highway 169 will reopen earlier than expected

Part of the highway has been closed since January.

There's some good news for commuters in the Twin Cities: Highway 169 will be reopening a few weeks earlier than expected.

Both directions of the highway between Bren Road in Minnetonka and 7th Street in Edina have been closed since January so crews could replace the Nine Mile Creek Bridge.

The start date for the 9-month project had been delayed twice, which pushed the completion date from September to the end of October

But now it looks like the highway will reopen Oct. 1, MnDOT's website shows

David Aeikens, of MnDOT, told GoMN the project is on track to be finished by Oct. 1, depending on the weather.

"MnDOT saw the ability to accelerate the project and get an important corridor open" to all the people who use it, Aeikens told GoMN.

Aeikens said he thinks MnDOT will make a more formal announcement about the highway reopening after Labor Day.

It's good news for commuters

This is good news for the 90,000 drivers who used the Nine Mile Creek Bridge every day. For the past several months, they've been using alternate routes like Highway 62, Highway 100, Interstate 394, as well as smaller highways.

The Highway 169 closure – along with all the other major road construction happening throughout the metro area – has made traffic pretty miserable this summer and has upset people who live near the detour routes.

In addition to replacing the Nine Mile Creek Bridge, this $64 million project also includes other improvements to the highway and exit ramps between Golden Valley and Eden Prairie, which has prompted various ramp closures this summer.

But don't get excited yet. There are a few more ramp closures planned before the project is finished. MnDOT said Tuesday the two ramps to and from Bren Road in Edina and Minnetonka will be closed from 5 a.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8.
