Goodbye, Rhoda: Valerie Harper of 'Mary Tyler Moore Show' dies

The 80-year-old's long battle with cancer ended on Friday morning.

Valerie Harper, who played Rhoda Morgenstern in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" as well as a spinoff series of her own, has lost her battle with cancer.

The actress died Friday morning at the age of 80, some six years after she was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer and given just months to live, CBS News reports.

The network says an exact cause of death was not immediately available, but notes that doctors recommended hospice care for her last month.

As Rhoda, Harper was the upstairs neighbor and best friend of Mary Tyler Moore (Mary Richardson in the show, which takes place in Minneapolis) for four seasons until the character was given her own series called "Rhoda."

It ran for five seasons before cancellation.

A number of Harper's fellow actors paid tribute to her on Twitter, including Mary Tyler Moore co-star Ed Asner:

Her death comes about two years after that of Mary Tyler Moore herself.
