The Rochester Post Bulletin reports that Eric Schmidt, executive chairman and former chief executive officer of Google, has joined the 31-member Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, the governing body that oversees the world-famous Rochester clinic.

Schmidt's Wall Street Journal bio says that he was recruited by Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 2001, and shares responsibility with the founders for Google's day-to-day operations. Prior to his appointment at Google, he was CEO at Novell and chief technology officer and CEO at Sun Microsystems Inc., where he led the development of Java. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University as well as a master's degree and Ph.D. in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

The Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees, made up of public representatives and Mayo Clinic physicians and administrators, is responsible for patient care, medical education and research. The board listed on the Mayo Clinic's website notes that longtime broadcaster Tom Brokaw, businesswoman Marilyn Carlson Nelson and former Medtronic CEO and author Bill George, are also trustees.

A different board is charged with overseeing the ambitious plan to oversee billions of dollars in upgrades by the city and the clinic over the next two decades. The Destination Medical Center Board includes Rochester's mayor and city council president, along with four appointees made by Gov. Mark Dayton.
