A seemingly innocent message sent out on Twitter Monday evening, commenting on the death by suicide of actor and comedian Robin Williams, quickly turned into a full-blown Twitter war among political partisans on the eve of Minnesota's primary election.

Bluestem Prairie, a left-leaning political blog, called attention to the feud.

Williams, 63, was found dead in his California home Monday morning, and many celebrities, friends and fans have taken to social media to express their grief.

One of those messages was tweeted Monday evening by Minnesota DFL Party official Ellen Anderson.

The deputy chair of the Minnesota Republican Party, Chris Fields, responded this way.

(NOTE: As of early Tuesday afternoon, Fields had deleted his Twitter comments, so they no longer appear here as embedded tweets. The text of the tweets is still shown.)

And the Twitter conversation promptly exploded from there, with many critics accusing Fields of being insensitive, and using Williams' death to try to score political points. Fields didn't back down.
