Gov. Dayton calls in National Guard to help with the Hubbard Co. wildfire

Gov. Mark Dayton has signed an emergency executive order, asking for help putting out a wildfire in northern Minnesota.

According to the order, the Minnesota National Guard must support the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center (MIFC) until the situation in Hubbard County is under control.

That's because MIFC, the State Emergency Operations Center and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources do not have enough resources to handle the widespread fire and have asked for help.

The blaze in north central Minnesota's Paul Bunyan State Forest had consumed 450 acres by noon Friday and was only 10 percent contained, KARE 11 says.

The Bemidji Pioneer adds that since the fire was reported near Lake Hattie on Thursday, several air tankers have worked to contain it. Additionally, fire crews fought from the ground without much success.

Wind and temperatures climbing well above 80 degrees definitely aren't helping either.

There’s a red flag warning – meaning fires could start and spread easily in these weather conditions – in effect for the entire top two-thirds of the state. See the map below.

Officials with the fire department in Superior, WI say that all of northern Minnesota and Wisconsin are under a "complete burning ban," meaning no backyard fires, campfires or anything of the sort. That is in effect through the weekend.

Additionally, Freeborn County has issued a burning ban. That one excludes recreational fires smaller than three feet in diameter.

Wildfires have been a big problem in Minnesota this week.

Monday and Tuesday, more than 100 fires broke out.

And Wednesday, a fire near Staples destroyed about 100 acres before being contained.

The Minnesota Incident Command System says that fire may have been caused by a person. It's currently under investigation.
