Governor declares state of emergency in northern Wisconsin wildfires
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency in response to fires in northern Wisconsin. The declaration directs state agencies to assist in the response and recovery and allows the Adjutant General to activate Wisconsin National Guard troops.
WDIO-TV reports the Germann Road Fire in Bayfield and Douglas Counties is the largest blaze to strike the area in 33 years. It destroyed 17 homes and burned more than 9,000 acres.
Gov. Walker will tour the area Thursday. He thanked Minnesota, Michigan, Ontario, and the U.S. Forest Service for their assistance in battling the stubborn blaze.
