Grab your galoshes: A lot of rain – and some flooding – expected this week

Southern Minnesota could see some flooding as summer bids us adieu.

The National Weather Service says "multiple rounds of heavy rain" are possible from Tuesday night through Thursday, which could cause water levels on rivers and lakes to rise, as well as some urban flash flooding.

Currently, the heaviest rainfall amounts are expected to be in east-central and southeastern Minnesota, but that could shift. That's why officials are asking people to keep an eye on the forecast the next few days.

The heaviest rainfall is expected Wednesday, the National Weather Service says. Rainfall totals will range from 1-3 inches for most of southern Minnesota, however local amounts may reach 6 inches – especially in the area that's listed as at a moderate risk for flash flooding (see the map below).

And this active weather pattern we're in is expected to continue through the weekend, the National Weather Service says. Things are expected to dry out Thursday (the first day of fall) into Friday, but more rain is in the forecast for the weekend.

Paul Huttner wrote on MPR News' Updraft blog that we could see 5-plus inch rainfall totals in southern Minnesota by Sunday.

Here's a look at projected rainfall totals over the next seven days:
