Grand Cafe bistro to close after a decade in business
The Grand Cafe, the French-style bistro that has plied its trade in south Minneapolis for ten years, is closing down.
Owners Dan and Mary Hunter made the announcement on the restaurant's Facebook page, telling fans they are "ready for a new chapter and we are saying goodbye."
"It's been an amazing run with so many wonderful memories," they continue, adding: "We will miss seeing all of you regulars that have been part of the Grand's ambience and wish you love, laughter and the best."
Sunday will be the last day of service.
The Minneapolis Eater reports that the timing is somewhat of a surprise given that the restaurant revealed just last month that Jamie Malone, who was named the Best New Chef 2013 by Food and Wine Magazine, has been brought in to run the kitchen.
Describing it as a place of "palpable warmth," the Grand is known for its locally-sourced, seasonal "dishes that comfort," with the current menu featuring duck confit cassoulet, roast chicken and spaghetti with lobster among its dishes.
The King Field neighborhood cafe occupies a spot on 38th and Grand and has for neighbors the popular Cuban spot, Victor's 1959 Cafe, and the tapas bar Rincon 38.
Last month, Piccolo – the acclaimed restaurant in the nearby East Harriet neighborhood – announced it would be closed as of March 11.
Don't worry too much about restaurant closures, Twin Cities foodies. CityPages reports that Minneapolis has seen massive growth in new restaurants in recent years, with 30 percent more new spots open than there were five years ago.
And this supply is being met with demand, with Americans spending more money in restaurants than they did in grocery stores last year – the first time that's ever happened.
