A 60-year-old man from Janesville, Minnesota drowned Friday after attempting to rescue his grandchildren from a lake in northeastern Minnesota, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's department, the Northland News Center reports.

Authorities say Douglas Yentsch was at a family cabin on Lake Nichols near Canyon, Minnesota, about 35 miles northwest of Duluth. He had been pulling two grandchildren on an inner tube behind a paddleboat he was operating. The tube flipped over and the children panicked, even though they had life jackets on, according to the Associated Press.

Yentsch jumped in to help them. He was not wearing a life vest and he went underwater. Neighbors pulled Yentsch out of the lake about 30 minutes later, and started CPR on him until emergency crews arrived and took over. According to the Northland News Center, they were unable to revive him.

Family members told authorities Yentsch had limited swimming ability, according to MPR News.

The children were unharmed.

The boy was unresponsive, and was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is in critical condition.

The Crow Wing County sheriff's office is investigating the incident. No foul play is suspected, but authorities don't know how the boy ended up in the water, according to FOX 9.
