A Farmington man has been charged with murder for killing his 84-year-old grandmother last week.

Timothy Robert Steele, 35, is accused of killing Agnes Wagner-Steele by hitting her in the head with a hammer, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Police were called to the Farmington home shared by Steele, his mother and grandmother about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, where they found Wagner-Steele dead in her bedroom.

According to the criminal complaint, Steele told police he struck his grandmother with a hammer seven or eight times in the head.

He said he was annoyed because she would blow her nose at dinner, and he also believed she caused a hole in one of his jackets, according to the Associated Press.

The Pioneer Press reports that Steele has been dealing with mental health issues and his grandmother had been living with dementia, according to a neighbor.

Steele made his first appearance Monday in Dakota County court in Hastings. Bail was set at $750,000 without conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12.

This is the first homicide in Farmington in 40 years, according to the Pioneer Press.
