Gregory Scheel indicted on 1st degree murder charges over grandparents' deaths

He's accused of strangling and suffocating the elderly pair.

Gregory Scheel, the man accused of killing his elderly grandparents in their Paynesville home, has been indicted on 1st degree murder charges.

A grand jury has indicted the 33-year-old on four counts of 1st degree murder and two counts of intentional 2nd degree murder over the deaths of of Wilbert, 93, and Gloria Scheel, 80, last month.

He is scheduled to make his first court appearance in response to the indictment on Wednesday, and is currently in Stearns County Jail on $3 million unconditional bail, or $1.5 million with conditions.

Scheel is accused of asphyxiating his grandfather using a plastic bag, and strangling his grandmother using electrical cord.

Their bodies were found in their car the next day in rural Kandiyohi County, having been reported missing the night they were killed. Gregory Scheel was found walking about a half mile away from the vehicle.

The Scheels were beloved in Paynesville, with those who knew them describing them as local "royalty," the Star Tribune reports.

If convicted, their grandson will spend the rest of his life in prison.
