Minn. gun sales brisk as nation mulls gun control proposals

Gun sales have soared in many places around the state and the nation since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut revived calls for stricter gun control.

“People are buying anything and everything – ammunition related, gun related, reloading material related – just because they’re afraid that it’s going to be tough to get or they may ban some of those things,” Tom Weber, a hardware store owner in Wadena, told the Wadena Pioneer, noting that sales have been up 50 percent in the last month.

On Monday, Anoka County received 49 applications for permits to carry handguns, which set a new one-day record, WCCO reported. And one Robbinsdale gun shop owner says that gun sales are better now than they have been in 10 years, Patch reported.

Nationwide, gun sales have been brisk since the Sandy Hook shootings because gun-buyers fear policy makers could curb their access to weapons, the New York Times reported.

Gun shows have reported high attendance, including at the Minnesota Weapons Collectors Association show in Rochester on Saturday, the Post Bulletin reported.

David Keene, the president of the National Rifle Association, was in St. Paul on Monday, saying he wants lawmakers to focus more on treatment for violent, mentally ill people instead of restricting gun rights, MPR reports.

Vice President Joe Biden, who has led a task force on gun violence, on Tuesday is expected to hand President Barack Obama a list of proposals. A new Washington Post/ABC poll shows that a majority of Americans support a ban on assault weapons, and they support posting armed guards at every school.
