More than 500 people assembled at the Minnesota State Capitol Saturday to take a stand against any strict gun control measures -- one of the many "Guns Across America" rallies taking place all over the U.S., the Star Tribune reports.

The nation's call for stricter gun laws comes in the aftermath of the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month, where 26 died -- 20 of them children.

Saturday's rallies nationwide come only days after President Barack Obama outlined his plan for curbing U.S. gun violence.

Minnesota lawmakers at the event Rep. Tom Hackbarth, R-Cedar, and Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Vernon Center.

According to the Star Tribune, Cornish vowed to push for legislation that would allow teachers to be armed at school no matter if the administration approved. Cornish also wants 21-year-olds to have the right to carry guns on college campuses.

Also at the rally were several members of the Gun Owner's Civil Rights Alliance, the Pioneer Press reports.

One member, Rob Doar, addressed the emotion of the gun debate, adding, "we are unified in the fact that the criminals are the problem, not the law-abiding."

Gun sales have reportedly soared in many places around the state and nation because buyers are fearing new gun control measures could limit their access to weapons.
