Gunshots fired into Minneapolis car may cost 9-year-old her eyesight

Two Minneapolis men are charged with assault after one allegedly fired shots at an SUV with four small children in it.

WCCO reports a girl who was hit in the eye by flying glass spent her 9th birthday in an intensive care unit, as surgeons try to save her eyesight.

The station says the criminal complaint alleges that Dionte Ramone Hill, 21, called a woman and asked her to meet him in an alley on the city's north side. As an argument escalated a second man, 20-year-old Myles Ray Estes, appeared and began using a brick to break windows on the woman's SUV. According to the complaint, Estes then fired gunshots as the woman drove away.

FOX 9 says the girl is likely to lose her eyesight.

KSTP reports the woman called 911 as she drove to Hennepin County Medical Center. Police met the family there, then returned to the scene of the shooting and arrested Hill and Estes. The station says police also found a handgun and ammunition.

While the eye injury resulted from flying glass, police told the Star Tribune one of the bullets may have grazed the girl's head. V.J. Smith, the president of the group Mad Dads, told the newspaper the girl had undergone multiple surgeries since Sunday's incident but family members did not want to speak with reporters.

MPR News says Myles Estes is awaiting trial on a separate gun-related charge that dates back to last year.

WCCO identified the 9-year-old as Anaia Callender and says donations to a fund to help with her medical expenses can be made at any U.S. Bank branch.
