Hagedorn latest Republican to join fight to unseat Walz

A third Republican has announced a challenge to unseat Rep. Tim Walz, the incumbent Democrat in Minnesota's 1st District.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that Jim Hagedorn, a 51-year-old from Blue Earth, is throwing his hat in the ring. He's been here before, having run for the Republican endorsement for the nod to challenge Walz four years ago.

Hagedorn has spent the past 25 years working on Capitol Hill. He was a former legislative assistant to Minnesota Congressman Arlan Stangeland. He also worked for two agencies of the U.S. Department of Treasury, and if the name rings a bell, it's because he's the son of former Congressman Tom Hagedorn.

As MPR notes, there's a little crowding on the Republican side for the seat, with state Rep. Mike Benson announcing in June, and Army veteran Aaron Miller from Byron announcing in early August.

There's been some shuffling in and out and rumbling about this race, but the field is these three for now.

Hagedorn says he'll abide by the GOP endorsement and not run a primary campaign if he fails to win the endorsement.

Miller is also pledging to abide by the endorsement, MPR reports; Benson is not.
