Hamline U. athlete arrested after woman punched
A Hamline University basketball player has been charged with second-degree assault stemming from a New Year's Eve altercation in Spokane, Wash. A 20-year-old woman says the player punched her in the face, breaking her eye socket and jaw, WXLY in Spokane reported.
Eugene Lawrence appeared Wednesday in a Washington courtroom, and because he has no criminal history, his bail was set at $5,000, the station reported.
It's not clear exactly what led to the confrontation. The woman, Kayla Bray, is a high school friend of Lawrence teammate Tyler Pannell, and Bray and Pannell planned to get together after a game Monday night. At some point, she got into an argument with Lawrence and she says he hit her, knocking her to the ground.
An assistant Hamline coach declined comment, WXLY reported. Lawrence's player profile has been removed from the team roster on its website.
