Hard Rock Cafe rolls back into Minnesota – at Mall of America

Like an aging rocker, the Hard Rock Cafe is poised for a comeback in Minnesota, after disappearing when the outlet in Block E in downtown Minneapolis closed in 2011.

The Hard Rock's encore was set for this month, although an exact opening date has not been set, the Pioneer Press reports.

Fans of the aging 189-restaurant global restaurant chain will recognize its bread and butter: traditional American fare food coupled with rock memorabilia that gives the cafes a music-museum vibe.

Inside the new multi-level spot nestled next to the megamall's Nickelodeon Universe theme park, you'll find Bob Dylan's harmonica, lryics by Kurt Cobain and KISS' Gene Simmons' bass guitar. The location also includes a performance space for live jams.

Hard Rock started as an American burger joint opened in London in 1971, and launched its U.S. expansion in Los Angeles in 1982.

The chain then skyrocketed to fame in part on the popularity of its once-ubiquitous T-shirts in the 1980s. The cafe plans to audience test two T-shirt designs for the new location: "Hard Rock Minneapolis" and "Hard Rock Mall of America," the Pioneer Press reports.

The chain with its roots in the age of vinyl has sought to stay relevant in a digital download era, CNN reported earlier this year.

"I think that's part of the challenge for this brand as it does have a history, but it's also part of the beauty," CEO Hamish Dodds told CNN.
