Head of TSA visits MSP airport, promises faster lines

Wait times at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport have been a hot topic for travelers, political leaders and airport workers.

As complaints pour in, the Transportation Security Administration has been discussing plans to cut down on the long lines, and on Friday an administrator visited MSP to address the situation.

TSA Administrator Peter Neffenger says the wait times are improving, but they still need to get better, according to FOX 9.

Initially, staffing was to be reduced by 1,700 by the end of September. But Neffenger said that the TSA has gotten approval to reverse that, USA Today reports. The news source says the administration is now working to add more security officers.

FOX 9 says the TSA is making MSP a priority and bringing new workers there before working on other airports.

And earlier this week, the administration announced they'd bring in bomb-sniffing dogs and more workers to speed up the process.

Neffenger says the K-9 teams will improve the situation in days, the Star Tribune says. The paper notes that a new team of dogs will start working this week, and another team will be transferred from Hawaii at the end of the month.

Additionally, the agency has approved overtime hours. That means all 16 lanes at the Terminal 1 checkpoints are running for the first time in nearly a month.

The Pioneer Press says wait times this week have been considerably shorter than they were when the new checkpoints first opened. The paper says the peak wait times have been between 22 and 28 minutes. When the checkpoints debuted, some people waited more than an hour.

Minneapolis is expected to see 4.5 percent more passengers this March than last year, so the airport is telling people to arrive at least two hours early.

Also, busiest travel times are 5:30-6 a.m., 7:30-8:45 a.m., and 2-3 p.m.
