Health officials have confirmed that a ninth child has died from an influenza-related illness this season.

The latest flu figures released by the Minnesota Department of Health show that nine people under the age of 18 have now died of complications from the flu since the beginning of December.

It is the first death noted by the department in a month, and according to KSTP it marks the same number of children who died during the Minnesota flu pandemic of 2009.

The 2014/15 season is the worst Minnesota has seen over the past five years, with 3,849 confirmed hospitalizations. The next highest was in 2012/13, when 3,068 were hospitalized.

The spread of the infection has been downgraded after being considered "widespread" in December and January, but there are still localized pockets around the state.
