Heat advisory issued; wildfires burning on Red Lake Reservation

Two weeks after a winter storm warning was issued in the metro, a heat advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service.

Heat advisories are issued when high temps and high humidity combine to make heat illnesses more likely, and people are urged to stay out of the sun, drink extra liquids, seek out air conditioning and check up on relatives and neighbors.

That's not to be confused with two other warnings that have been issued: A red flag warning is in effect Tuesday for much of the state that indicates high temperatures and winds (predicted at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph) increase wildfire risks.

About 1,200 acres have already been charred on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, the Associated Press reports.

The Weather Service has also issued a hazardous weather outlook, indicating stormy weather ahead for portions of central and southern Minnesota. Thunderstorms are possible beginning Thursday, forecasters say.

On Tuesday it'll be hot and breezy in much of the state: 94 in the Twin Cities (95 is the record high from 1932); 90 in Rochester; 94 in Mankato; 84 in Bemidji; 86 in Alexandria and 76 in International Falls, WCCO reports. Tuesday's temps in the Twin Cities will be about 25 degrees above normal, KARE 11 reports.

High temperatures will dip down into the 70s in much of the state on Wednesday, forecasters say.
