Heat wave drops State Fair attendance to 5-year low

Three days of oppressive heat and humidity is keeping people indoors this week, driving down attendance numbers at the Minnesota State Fair and creating disappointing sales for vendors.

The Business Journal reports Tuesday's attendance of 94,076 is the lowest daily total in the past five years and down more than 27,000 compared to 2012.

The high Tuesday reached 96 degrees with heat indices between 105 and 110 degrees.

So far, overall fair attendance is down nearly 9 percent compared to the six-year period last year, the Business Journal calculated.

Vendors told the Star Tribune that business is also down and some sent employees home to spare them from the heat.

Known for their deep friend Twinkies, Spaghetti Eddies reported a 50 percent drop in sales compared to last year.

“It’s just too hot to even want to think about eating,” Porcelli told WCCO.

Relief is on sight, but not in the immediate future. Twin Cities forecasters are predicting cooler temperatures to cap off Labor Day weekend.

KSTP predicts a cold front early Sunday should drop highs into the low 80s. Monday, Labor Day, looks cooler with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.
