Heavy downpours flood streets in Moorhead; neighbors rescue woman

Motorists in Moorhead were dealing with flooded roadways Wednesday after an isolated storm swamped the area.

The biggest problem was all the rain that fell in such a short time span, Forum News reports. Rain began around 3 p.m. and in less than an hour the area picked up around 2 inches.

Flooding on the roadways was bad enough in some areas of the city that a woman who was attempting to cross the street had to be rescued after she fell in the flooded roadway, Valley News Live reports.

Moorhead police reported several cars stalling near 12th Avenue, Valley News Live says. Flooding was also reported on 20th Street, which was closed down from 16th Avenue to 24th Avenue, the news station says.

These storms were very isolated, however. Dilworth picked up around 2.5 inches of rain, while Hector International Airport in north Fargo only recorded about 0.01 inches of rain from the storm, the Forum notes.

The storm that brought flooding to northwestern Minnesota then moved into the St. Cloud area, dumping 2.5 inches of rain in some areas. The St. Cloud International Airport picked up around 1.57 inches of rain, the National Weather Service

More rain on the way

Northwestern Minnesota could see another inch or so of rain as storms move east into western Minnesota Thursday evening, with locally heavy rainfall also possible.

These isolated storms have a marginal risk of producing severe weather in the region, with the main threat being large hail, damaging wind or an isolated tornado, the National Weather Service tweeted. The areas that see the most sunshine Thursday have the greatest chance of severe weather later in the day, the weather service notes.

The rest of the state also has the chance of seeing showers and thunderstorms Thursday, the National Weather Service says. Showers and thunderstorms are also possible this weekend as highs around the state are expected to be in the 80s and 90s.
