A Christmas night snow storm is expected to bring some significant snowfall to much of Minnesota both Friday night and Saturday.

According to FOX 9, it will likely be the first widespread snowfall event of the season.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for portions of west central and north eastern Minnesota. According to the weather service, 6-to-8 inches of snow is expected in the warned area. Just before 7 p.m. snow began falling in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area.

The heaviest snow is expected generally west of a line from St. Peter to Willmar, while the rest of the state – including the Twin Cities metro area – is under a winter weather advisory.

Three-to-five inches of snow will be possible across the rest of the state. The Star Tribune reports the heavier snowfall totals in the metro will be in the northern counties, including parts of Wright and Hennepin.

Snowfall is expected to begin late Christmas night across most of Minnesota and continue throughout the day on Saturday, while northwest winds are expected to pick up and gust between 15-and-25 mph.

KSTP notes that parts of south-central Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin may see a mix of freezing rain and snow. In areas with the mixed precipitation 1-3 inches of snow will be possible.

While the storm may not be an epic snow maker, FOX 9 notes that it is likely to create plenty of travel difficulties. The Minnesota Department of Transportation keeps updated travel conditions on their website at
