Hennepin County's longest-serving sheriff has died

Authorities say he helped shape the sheriff's office into what it is today.

Saturday, Hennepin County announced one of the sheriff's office's influential leaders has died.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sheriff Omodt," the Facebook post reads.

Don Omodt served as the sheriff of Hennepin County from 1967 to 1994, making him the longest-serving sheriff in county history.

According to the post, Omodt was in office for seven terms. Authorities say he helped shape the sheriff's office into what it is today.

"Many of our current employees started their careers under Sheriff Omodt's leadership," the post explains.

Prior to becoming sheriff, Omodt served as a special agent with the FBI. He was also an assistant Hennepin County attorney.

Omodt was a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, having served in the U.S. Army, Airborne Division.

"Our agencies’ collective thoughts and prayers are with Sheriff Omodt’s family and friends, and we thank him for his life-time of service and leadership," the Facebook post finishes.
