The Minnesota Department of Health has announced the locations of six free COVID-19 testing sites across the state for the week of Oct. 5.

MDH is now in the third week of its free, no-barrier COVID-19 testing program in response to increased community spread across Minnesota. The testing is open to anyone, with or without symptoms, and no health insurance is needed.

Testing centers will be running in St. Joseph, Willmar, Fairmont, Inver Grover Heights, Ely and Clouquet the week of Oct. 5 (details on the locations and how to make an appointment are at the bottom of this page).

“We know some people who contract COVID-19 might not even know they have it,” MDH Commissioner Jan Malcolm said in a news release. “That’s part of what makes this virus so dangerous and makes easy access to testing and quick results so important.

"All who contract the virus are contagious and giving people a chance to get tested allows people to isolate if positive and let their close contacts know they should quarantine," Malcolm added.

MDH says health officials will use testing data to identify communities that have workplace clusters, are close to bordering states or haven't yet had larger-scale testing offered. Testing sites will "help increase the geographic balance of testing across Minnesota and respond where the health risk is greatest," MDH said, noting previous community testing sites were in Grand Rapids, Pine City, Waseca, Bloomington, Maplewood, Moorhead, Marshall, Thief River Falls and Bemidji.

Malcolm notes that this week, when the state offered free testing at six sites across the state, 4,700 people sought a test on the first two days of the event, and many already have their results.

Testing the week of Oct. 5 will be done using a nasal swab. The results will be processed by Mayo Clinic Laboratories or the University of Minnesota.
