A day after Labor Day the Minnesota Department of Health is reporting lower testing and positive COVID-19 results, with just over 380 new cases and two deaths in Tuesday's update.

There have now been 1,862 deaths from COVID-19 in Minnesota, of which 1,360 have happened in long-term care facilities. The newest deaths reported Tuesday include a person in their 40s from Ramsey County and a patient in their 70s from Hennepin County. Both were from private residences.

Tuesday's update includes 387 new positive tests for the coronavirus, four of which have been removed for an official count of 383 new cases. Those positive cases are the result of 4,195 people tested, creating a 24-hour reporting period test positivity rate of 9.13%.

The positive test rate is lower from the perspective when the number of individuals producing positive tests (383) divided by total completed tests (7,357). In that case, the positivity rate is 5.21%.

The "tests completed" number is always higher than the "people tested" metric because some people get tested multiple times and those who test positive are only counted once, so it produces a less accurate positivity rate.

The test positivity rate over a 7-day average, based on total number of people tested, according to Johns Hopkins University, was 7.70% as of Monday. Anything over 5% can indicate more aggressive community transmission, MDH officials say.

Coronavirus in Minnesota by the numbers:

  • Total tests: 1,616,738 (up from 1,609,618)
  • People tested: 1,201,870 (up from 1,197,675)
  • Positive cases: 81,608 (up from 81,225)
  • Deaths: 1,862 (up from 1,860)
  • Currently hospitalized: 257 (down from 275)
  • Patients in intensive care: 135 (down from 136)
  • Patients no longer requiring isolation: 74.235 (up from 73,403)

There have also been 52 deaths where COVID-19 is listed by doctors as the "probable" cause, though it's not included in the official COVID-19 death toll.
