Orange cones and detour signs will again decorate metro-area roadways this weekend as construction season is in full swing, but good news broke Friday morning with KSTP traffic reporter Josie Smith saying she received word that plans to shut down a stretch of Interstate 94 in St. Paul have been canceled due to rain in the forecast.

The plan was close a stretch of westbound I-94 from Western Ave. to Hwy. 280. The detour, which will eventually be put into place when the weather cooperates, will take motorists to northbound I-35E over to westbound Hwy. 36 and then south on Hwy. 280 just to get back to westbound I-94.

That's the good news. Now the closures that'll impact your weekend driving in the metro.

Interstate 94 in Minneapolis

Closed: I-94 eastbound between I-35W and I-394 from 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday. It's part of the downtown to crosstown project. But there's good news coming Monday with the 28th St. bridge set to reopen.

Interstate 35W from Roseville to Lino Lakes – and further north

The main impacts from this work will be the closure of the ramp from southbound I-35W to County Road I. It'll stay closed through November, with the detour incorporating County Road H, County Road I and Thumb Road.

Another impact will hit at 10 p.m. Friday when County Road I is closed at I-35W. It'll reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

Further north, northbound I-35 is knocked down to a single lane for a mile before the I-35W/I-35E split through the fall, and there are ongoing periodic lane closures in both directions from the split to Hwy. 8.

A bit further north, both directions of I-35 are reduced to a single lane from just north of Harris to Chisago/Pine counties through the end of October.

Basically, anyone looking to drive between the north metro and Duluth could be hit with some rough delays this summer.

Interstate 494 in Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul

From 8 p.m. Sunday until 5 a.m. Monday, eastbound I-494 will be down to a single lane between 7th Ave. and Hwy. 61. During that same timeframe, the ramp from Concord St. to eastbound I-494 will be closed – and it'll stay closed through early August.

Then, at 5 a.m. Monday, eastbound I-494 will be reduced to two lanes between 7th Ave. and Hwy. 61. That'll stay that way through early August.
