Update: 2 children, 2 adults die in Hibbing house fire

The kids were staying with their grandparents.

The Essentials

1. Two young boys and their grandparents died after being trapped in a house burning from a "heavy fire." The blaze was reported just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on the south end of Hibbing, the city's fire department said in a news release

2. Crews arrived on scene at 1:46 a.m. and went into the home to rescue them, coming out with the victims within seven minutes. All four did not have a pulse and were not breathing. Two of them, both adults, died. The other two, both juveniles, were resuscitated on the scene and flown to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries. Tuesday afternoon Hibbing police said both later died of their injuries.

3. A fifth person, also a juvenile, escaped the home before first responders arrived, and had minor injuries. The victims haven't been publicly identified. Crews battled subzero temps (the wind chill hit -38 overnight) and had the fire out at 4:39 a.m.

What Else You Should Know

"This is a heavy day for the Hibbing Fire Department and we send our condolences to the family of this terrible tragedy," the department wrote on Facebook.

How the fire started hasn't been determined yet, but the fire department reminded people to test their smoke alarms and look through their house for possible fire hazards.

Tuesday morning's blaze is the latest in what has already been a particularly deadly year for fires in Minnesota. Those four deaths bring the number of fire-related fatalities in 2017 up to at least 60 people, according to figures published last week by the Department of Public Safety.

That's far higher than the total number for all of 2016, when there were 43.

The last time Minnesota had more than 60 fire-related deaths was 15 years ago, when there were 64 in 2002.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires in the state, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Jim Smith says, with careless smoking also a serious problem.
