Highway 5 reconstruction near MSP Airport finally wraps up

Air travel was cut down dramatically because of the pandemic during the construction project.

The spring-to-fall road construction that has closed roadways and ramps near MSP Airport is about to wrap up, with MnDOT announcing Monday that all lanes and ramps of the Hwy. 5 project will be reopened by 5 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6.

Westbound lanes of Hwy. 5 were reopened on Tuesday, as was the ramp from Interstate 494 to 34th Ave. near the airport.

The reconstruction project, which cost $26 million, included the rebuilding of ramps and bridges and improving traffic flow, according to MnDOT. The project started in March, prompting an advisory for travelers to leave early to deal with a detour.

The work saw westbound Hwy. 5 between Terminal 1 and I-494 closed Aug. 14 through Nov. 3, in addition to westbound Hwy. 5 between Hwy. 55/62 and Terminal 1 remaining closed through early Friday this week.

The following ramps will all be reopened by the end of this week:

  • WB Hwy 5 to EB I-494
  • WB I-494 to 34th Ave.
  • WB Hwy 5 to 34th Ave.
  • WB Hwy 62/55 to WB Hwy 5
  • EB Hwy 62/55 to WB Hwy 5
  • WB Hwy 5 to EB I-494
  • WB Hwy 5 to WB I-494
  • WB Hwy 5 to 34th Ave.
