Two Minnesota police officer slain in the line of duty will be commemorated by state highways bearing their names.

The Minnesota Senate passed two bills unanimously Friday calling for the name change on segments of the state highways.

A section of Highway 36 in Maplewood now be called Sgt. Joseph Bergeron Memorial Highway, while a section of Highway 149 in Mendota Heights is now known as Police Officer Scott Patrick Memorial Highway.

Patrick was a 19-year-veteran of the Mendota Police Department who was shot and killed at a traffic stop in 2014.

Shooter Brian Fitch was found guilty of murder in February and sentenced to life in prison.

Begeron was killed in 2010 when he responded to reports of a carjacking. He was shot by one of two men involved as he exited his squad car.

The shooter Jason Jones was later killed by another officer, while the second man Joshua Martin is serving a 35-year prison sentence, the Pioneer Press reports.

Bergeron was a 26-year veteran at the Maplewood Police Department.

"His life will not go unnoticed," Sen. Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, told his Senate colleagues as they unanimously passed the name changes Friday, the newspaper reports.
