Hiker clung from tree on Barn Bluff until rescued by fire department

A hiker was rescued by the Red Wing Fire Department on Sunday afternoon after falling from Barn Bluff, according to the police department's Facebook page.

The victim fell while hiking and was hanging from a tree 25-30 feet above the base of the trail.

Firefighters climbed a trail up to the victim, put him in a rescue harness with a rope, and then lowered him to safety.

The victim was uninjured and refused medical treatment or transportation.

Six responders on one fire engine and two ambulances arrived on the scene within 4 minutes of the call, said the post. They were with the hiker about 10 minutes later.

Today's victim was luckier than others who have fallen from the bluff.

Last year an Iowa man fell to his death while on a dangerous Barn Bluff trail that had been closed to hikers.

And in 2013, a jogger had a fatal fall off the bluff. Later that year, a woman was rescued by a helicopter after she fell from one of the bluff's trails, reported the Duluth News Tribune.

The Red Wing Police Department encourages hikers to be mindful of their surroundings and use extreme caution when in unfamiliar areas.
