After Secretary of State Mark Ritchie announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election, Democratic state Rep. Debra Hilstrom of Brooklyn Center tells the Associated Press that she plans to go for Ritchie's seat in 2014.

Hilstrom, a seven-term lawmaker, said she intended to file campaign fundraising paperwork Friday.

The only other Democrat in the race so far is Rachel Larson Bohman, who served as an election official for over 15 years, including during the U.S. Senate recount in 2008 and the recount in the 2010 Governor's race.

Hilstrom is an assistant Anoka County attorney and was chair of the House Judiciary Finance and Policy Committee, according to an ECM Publishers report.

Hilstrom tells MPR that her goals as secretary of state would be limiting corporate and special interest influence in elections, along with maintaining Minnesota's status as a top state for voter turnout.
