St. Francis-St. James United School in St. Paul will close its doors by the end of the year after nearly 130 years in existence, the Pioneer Press reported.

The school, located in St. Paul's West Seventh neighborhood, is one of nine metro Catholic Schools closed in the past five years by the Archdiocese of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

The news of the shutdown comes less than six months after the Archdiocese shut down St. Matthew's School in St. Paul after 125 years.

St. Francis-St. James United School serves 75 students.

The school originated as St. Francis de Sales School in 1884, and the neighboring parish of St. James opened its school in 1913, the Pioneer Press reported. St. Francis and St. James eventually merged in 1988.
