A 62-year-old Cloquet man died after a hit-and-run on Interstate 35 that led police on a 25-mile chase Wednesday evening.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that a 55-year-old rural Duluth man was arrested after the chase and is in the Carlton County jail.

State Patrol officials said they were first called to the Culkin Rest Area off northbound I-35, south of Cloquet, about 5:30 p.m. on reports that a blue 2004 Ford pickup struck a man who was walking at the rest stop. Witnesses saw the pickup leaving the scene.

WCCO-TV reports that a short time later, a vehicle matching the description was observed on northbound Interstate 35 near Highway 210 traveling at speeds of over 90 mph.

A chase ensued up I-35, onto Boundary Avenue in Proctor, onto U.S. Highway 2 and into Hermantown, according to the News Tribune. Proctor and Hermantown police also gave chase. The Carlton and St. Louis County sheriff’s offices as well as a Department of Natural Resources officer assisted in the pursuit, which ended with a PIT maneuver -- meaning police nudged the vehicle off the road.

Fox 9 is naming the suspect and says the driver of the pickup is a 55-year-old Duluth man who was arrested and booked into the Carlton County jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, fleeing police and third-degree DWI.

Fox also points out that this is the second hit-and-run on I-35 in as many days.

Tuesday night, 24-year-old Army veteran Trevor Langlois was helping another driver who was having car trouble when he was struck by a passing pickup truck near Hinckley. Langlois remains in the intensive care unit at Essentia Hospital in Duluth, the station reports.

Vehicle description in that hit-and-run is also a dark Ford pickup, an F-150 XTL, perhaps 2010 or newer.
