Hold on one more day, there's a warm-up coming tomorrow

We're in for another chilly day before warmer weather returns, bringing with it the chance for a clipper or two of wintry weather.

The actual air temperature will be warmer Thursday than it was Wednesday, but the "feels like" temperatures are brutal across the state (see maps) – the subzero wind chills are expected to stick around until after lunch, Paul Douglas wrote on the Star Tribune's weather blog.

The northwest corner of Minnesota was all above zero Thursday morning – Thief River Falls was the warmest, reaching 9 degrees before sunrise, according to U.S. Air Net.

The rest of the state was dealing with subzero temperatures and even colder wind chills – the Rochester area was sitting at minus 15 degrees around 6 a.m. Thursday, the website notes, and the Twin Cities was around minus 6.

Here comes the warm-up, and some snow

A stationary front from the south will move into the Twin Cities Friday, which will bring slightly warmer temperatures for the weekend and early next week, the National Weather Service says.

The high in the Twin Cities will be near 30 degrees this weekend. The average for this time of year is in the mid-20s, according to AccuWeather.

However, with that little warm-up comes the chance for wintry weather. Two bouts of precipitation could impact Minnesota Thursday night and into the weekend, the weather service says.

The first system could produce 1-2 inches of snow Thursday night into Friday in northern Minnesota, with less snow farther south and a wintry mix possible in the Twin Cities, the weather service notes.

A second system is expected to bring snow to northern Minnesota Friday night into Saturday, with 2-5 inches possible, with the chance of light freezing rain farther south. Light icing and light snow accumulations are possible in the metro, the weather service says.
