Holy cow-llection: Minnesota woman hopes to set world record with Moo-seum items

A Lafayette, Minnesota, woman is hoping to set a Guinness World Record with her "udder-ly" amazing spotted cow collection.

Ruth Kossner has more than 15,000 bovine items in her herd, including cookie jars, figurines, wood carvings, wall hangings, toys, games, clothes, books, candles, coffee mugs, pencils, ornaments, floor mats, salt and pepper shakers, and much, much more, Farm Show reported.

Each item, including her most-prized cow statue "Tippifina" – a gift from actress and Lafayette native Tippi Hedren – is numbered and logged into a computer database, which will allow Guinness World Record officials to verify her collection, The Journal reports.

And her 15,000-plus cow items should be enough to break the world record. Currently Denise Tubangui of California, holds the Guinness World Record for largest collection of cow-related items with 2,429. She's been collecting since 1990 when she saw a cow figurine in her mother's kitchen.

Klossner's love for the animal, and her collection, has spanned decades. Her love of bovines began when she was a young girl growing up on a dairy farm and participating in 4-H programs – one of her oldest cow-related items in her collection is a 4-H cow trophy she won in 1964 as a Nicollet County Holstein Girl, KARE 11 reported in 2013.

She bought her first collectible at a house auction in October 1973, paying $8 for the cow and calf figurine, the St. Peter Herald reported. But she really got serious about collecting in 1979.

Many of her cow items are gifts; the others were picked up at auctions and souvenir shops.

“Some people say I’m the easiest person to buy for because they just buy a cow,” she told the St. Peter Herald. “Some people say I’m the hardest, because they’re afraid I already have it.”

Her passion for all things cattle has graced both local and international headlines, including agriculture publications in Polish and Danish, reports note.

And although she wants to secure the world record, she says the fun is finding all the mooing items she can and sharing them with people in her aptly named Moo-seum – she opened up her home last weekend for the 16th annual Moo-seum open house, Sleepy Eye News reports. In past years, it's drawn guests from nearby towns and as far away as the Netherlands, reports say.

Anyone who wants to tour the Moo-seum can schedule an appointment by calling 507-240-0048 or email
