Holy Crock-Pot! North Dakota town goes for chili world record
More than 170 volunteers turned out Saturday in Minto, just north of Grand Forks, to try to break the Guinness world record for the largest single serving of chili.
WDAY-TV in Fargo reports that a trailer dragged a 300-gallon milk-holding container onto Main Street. Inside the tank there was 2,420 pounds of chili con carne, which some volunteers began cooking as early as 4 a.m.
More than 170 volunteers, all clad in yellow “Chili Party” T-shirts, came from all around the country to make the day a success, the Grand Forks Herald reports. “You’d have a hard time getting that many people to come to church!” the organizer joked to the Herald.
When the pot arrived at Main Street from the Minto Grain Elevator, where it had been weighed, all the volunteers gathered for a group photo, the Herald reports.
Of course, the stunt was tied to various local charities, as the Minto Chili Feed is helping the Sunshine Memorial Foundation. The proposed Sunshine Hospitality Home would provide cheap lodging for patients and their families who must travel to Grand Forks for medical treatment.
As these things go, somehow no one snapped a picture of the chili -- at least not one for public consumption. But WDAY reports that organizers estimate they have beaten the previous Guinness world record by about 1,000 pounds, but official results will not come in for several weeks.
