The death of a man found on a snowmobile trail on the Iron Range has been ruled a homicide.

Officers and medical personnel were dispatched to the Mesabi Trail on the west side of Hibbing around 3 p.m. Sunday after a snowmobiler reported finding a man on the trail, according to a news release from Hibbing Police Department.

Responders pronounced the man dead at the scene and later used fingerprints to identify him as Joshua Robert Lavalley, 33, of Aurora – a small town in St. Louis County about 40 miles east/northeast of Hibbing.

The cause of Lavalley's death has not been announced.

Hibbing PD is asking anyone who had contact with Lavalley over the weekend or anyone who was on the Mesabi Trail on Sunday to call them at 218-263-3601.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, DNR and St. Louis County Sheriff's Office are assisting in the investigation.
