Investigators say a 55-year-old woman left her niece and nephew, ages 2 and 3, in an unheated car while she went inside a Hopkins bar to drink Sunday night, WCCO reported.

A restaurant employee at Lindee’s Saloon and Eatery had found the two children in the locked vehicle, shivering without jackets, hats or gloves in sub-freezing temperatures, WCCO said. A manager, noting a broken car window, broke it further to get the kids out. Staffers warmed the kids up, fed them and changed a diaper, WCCO reports.

Police were called, but the aunt had left in a taxi. Police traced the car to the woman, identified as Sarah Joan Philbrick, the Star Tribune reported.

She eventually returned and was arrested and taken to the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on two counts of child endangerment, which are gross misdemeanors, WCCO reports.

The children's parents had been at work and asked police to take the children to another relative, WCCO said.

Patch, which reported that the children were ages 1 and 3, said Philbrick is due in court Tuesday.
