Hospital exec: Mayo spreads false information about competitors

The CEO of River's Edge Hospital in St. Peter says Mayo Clinic Health System is spreading false information about its competitor and has asked Minnesota's attorney general to investigate.

Colleen Spike tells the Mankato Free Press staff at Mayo, which operates a St. Peter clinic, have falsely told patients that River's Edge is full or that it doesn't perform certain procedures. Spike says there are too many instances of misinformation to be chalked up to mistakes or sloppiness. She's convinced there's a concerted effort by Mayo to crush its competition.

Mayo Clinic Health System denies that claim and says the company has not made false statements about River's Edge. A spokesman says last year most of the patients admitted to River's Edge were referred there by Mayo Clinic Health System providers.

Spike wrote her letter to Attorney General Lori Swanson in October and shared parts of it with the hospital commission in November. She tells KEYC she just wants consumers in southern Minnesota to know they have choices.

River's Edge is a 17-bed hospital owned by the city of St. Peter. Spike tells the Free Press it's operating at a deficit of nearly $1.6 million per year.
