Hot, muggy weather to start the week; storms possible Monday night

Another hot and muggy day is ahead – and it'll "stick" around for the next few days.

Temperatures are expected to climb to between 85 and 90 degrees Sunday, with the dew point ranging from lower 60s to lower 70s for much of the state, the National Weather Service says. (A dew point above 65 is when it really starts to feel sticky outside, MinnyApple notes.)

And that's the case for Monday and Tuesday as well, before a front moves that will bring cooler air to Minnesota Wednesday.

The heat index in the afternoons from Sunday through Tuesday is expected to exceed 95 degrees for much of the state, which has weather officials reminding people to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Storms possible

A few afternoon showers are possible Sunday, but mainly in the southern part of the state. More widespread thunderstorm activity is expected Monday night, with a few of them having the potential to be severe, the weather service says.

Storms will develop from west to east Monday night into Tuesday, with the main threats being damaging winds and large hail. Weather officials still haven't nailed down the timing and location of the storms – get the latest forecast by clicking here.

The storms are expected to clear out early Tuesday, giving the temperature plenty of time to heat up for the afternoon – a high of 90 degrees is possible in the Twin Cities Tuesday, MinnyApple notes.

A reprieve from the hot and muggy air comes Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to be in the mid-70s to lower 80s around the state. (See the National Weather Service's temperature forecast map here.)
