Human leg bone with shoe found by Mississippi River in southeast Minnesota

Authorities are investigating a case in which human remains were discovered near the Mississippi River over the weekend. 

According to the Wabasha County Sheriff's Office, the remains were found around 4:50 p.m. on Saturday near the Mississippi River in West Newton, an unincorporated town located south of Lock and Dam #4 – about 10 miles southeast of Wabasha. 

A local resident found the remains while cleaning out a debris pile about 20 feet from the shore.

In the pile was a human leg from the femur to the foot, which still had a shoe on it.

No other body parts were found. 

An investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time. 

The leg bone is being reviewed by the Medical Examiner's Office.
