Hummer crashes into car, killing 8-year-old girl, critically injuring 2 others

A report says a mother was taking her two children to school when they were hit from behind.

An 8-year-old girl died and a two other people suffered critical injuries in a crash in southern Minnesota on Friday morning. 

The Minnesota State Patrol says the fatal crash happened just after 7 a.m. on Hwy. 14 near 130th Ave. on the east side of Claremont, which is located about 15 east of Owatonna.

A 2010 Mercury Milan waiting to turn left off of westbound Hwy. 14 was struck from behind by a man driving a 2008 Hummer. 

The Milan was carrying two children as passengers. The 8-year-old girl, identified by the state patrol as Emerson Melissa Harberts, of Dodge Center, died at the scene.

A 12-year-old boy and the 43-year-old woman driving the car, also from Dodge Center, suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester by air ambulance. 

According to the Dodge County Independent, the children are brother and sister and were riding with their mother on the way to school. The 8-year-old girl was a third-grader at Blooming Prairie Elementary School.

Driving the Hummer was a 24-year-old man from Dodge Center who has no apparent injuries, according to the State Patrol.
