Hundreds gather for annual anti-tax rally at Capitol

The annual Taxpayer Freedom Rally drew hundreds to the Capitol steps to hear from well-known anti-tax figure Grover Norquist, Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann and conservative radio talk show host Jason Lewis.

The Star Tribune reports frustration among participants was higher this year because of the DFL-controlled state Legislature.

“Hardworking taxpayers cannot afford [Gov.] Mark Dayton and the DFL majorities in the Legislature,” Senate Minority Leader David Hann, R-Eden Prairie, told the newspaper. “They’re going to be serving up the biggest taxaplooza in the state, and we’re going to pay for it.”

Keynote speaker Norquist says Democrats won't stop at higher taxes for top earners.

Lewis is considering a run for U.S. Senate against Democratic Sen. Al Franken.

"Today’s events are a celebration of everything that is wrong for Minnesota,” Carrie Lucking, Executive Director of the Alliance for A Better Minnesota, told the newspaper. "Extreme pledges that preserve tax breaks for big corporations at our expense — wrong for Minnesota."
